Now imagine walking away from this phone without looking back—just keep walking until there's some distance between yourself and that scary device! And then come back into this room where all is safe again…

I'm glad you're here. This is a meditation to help you overcome your fear of telephones. I know it's a real struggle for some people, and I want to help you get over it so you can live a fuller life.
The first thing we need to do is find a place where you feel safe and secure. Find a quiet space where no one will interrupt us—maybe your bedroom or living room, or even the bathroom if it's clean enough (it doesn't have to be). Get yourself into a comfortable position: lie down on your bed or sit in an armchair with your feet on the ground, whatever makes you feel good. Let your eyes close, and take some deep breaths as we start our meditation.
Breathe in slowly through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Now imagine that all of the tension in your body is flowing out with each breath and leaving behind nothing but peace and relaxation. That's right… just breathe… let go… relax… everything is going to be okay…

Today's meditation is about the fear of telephones.
I want you to start by closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Make sure to take a full breath and let it out completely before inhaling again. If you find that your mind has wandered off, just bring it back to this moment and where you are.
Now I want you to imagine yourself standing in front of a telephone. It's ringing, so it's very loud in your ears—you can't ignore it because it's right there in front of you! Now pick up the phone and answer it! You see on my screen that the number is 555-5555, but since we're not actually calling anyone, just pretend they called YOU instead!
Now imagine that they're asking YOU what time it is… but they don't really care; instead they just want to see if YOU know! So tell them the correct time right now! Then hang up the phone!
Meditate on the following questions and answers to help you get over your fear of telephones:
1. What is it about phones that you're afraid of?
- I'm afraid that someone will call me and I won't be able to answer it.
2. Why do you think this makes you so uncomfortable?
- I feel like if someone calls me, they're going to tell me something bad has happened, and I'll have to deal with all of the emotions from that.
3. What would happen if they did tell me something bad had happened?
- I'd be sad, or angry, or maybe both! I don't want any part of those feelings right now.
4. Why not?
- It's just not fun when you're feeling those things; they make everything seem harder than it should be!
5. How do these feelings affect your life in a negative way?
- They make me want to stay home instead of going out with friends or family members because no one wants to deal with someone who's sad all the time!
